Despite the challenges of a pandemic — which wiped out Homecoming last year — and persistently cool, rainy weather, the 2021 Eagle Family Homecoming proved to be more than an exercise in school spirit: It brought alumni, staff, faculty and students together again for several days of fun!
“I want to give a special shot-out to our students,” says Kelsey Hatch-Brecek, director of alumni relations at EWU. “They turned out in force for the bed races and bonfire events. They truly showed what it means to be an Eagle.”
While those traditional activities always provide excitement, some of the newer happenings also gave participants a unique look behind the curtain at the university.
The new Red Turf Royalty event, for instance, featured a full line-up of Friday night activities, including a tour of the new Interdisciplinary Science Center and a private, after-hours “sip & shop” at The Eagle Store. The festivities continued with a catered dinner inside the dance studio, where guest speakers David May, Aaron Best and Lynn Hickey shared ‘inside’ stories on the goings-on at Eastern.
The evening concluded with a tour of the Roos Field press box guided by long-time (and newly retired) Sports Information Director Dave Cook, along with photos with Swoop on the 50-yard line.
Hatch-Brecek is already planning for next year’s event, where she hopes more community and alumni are able to participate.
