A new show in the EWU Gallery of Art by Walla Walla based artist and art professor, Emily Somoskey, will explore “the bridging between the psychological and the physical, the material and immaterial, and the digital and analog to create spaces that simultaneously feel familiar and unknown.” The exhibit, SURFACING, will run Sept. 29 through Nov. 3.
Somoskey is a mixed-media artist and painter. Her work is largely built through layering paint and various forms of photographic imagery, mediums that collectively create a complex and nuanced language that weave together moments of clarity and ambiguity.
Somoskey says she chose the title, SURFACING, because “surfacing implies the breaking of tension – the act of coming up for air, when something hidden comes to light, a transitional moment when perceptions and positions change.”
She will deliver a lecture on her work at noon on the show’s opening day, with a reception to follow.
The 2021 recipient of ‘Best of Show’ at the Open Regional Exhibition at Pendleton Center for the Arts has held numerous solo and two-person exhibitions and has taken part in even more group exhibits.
Somoskey is a visiting assistant professor of art at Whitman College in Walla Walla. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in studio art from Michigan State University and a bachelor’s degree in art education/painting from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio.
SURFACING is free and open to the public. EWU Gallery of Art hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
