Eastern Washington University has been ranked the most affordable LGBTQ-Friendly College in the state of Washington, and places No. 16 nationally out of 136 schools studied in the analysis.
The study was conducted by Student Loan Hero, which used the Campus Pride Index rating for its list of LGBTQ-friendly colleges and universities. Researchers then utilized the latest tuition and fee data from the NCES Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), administered within the U.S. Department of Education, to determine the most affordable schools.
“It is incredible to be recognized as a university that is not only affordable but LGBTQ+ friendly as it really centers the intersectionality of our community,” says Vanessa Delgado, interim director of Student Equity and Inclusion Services at EWU.
“When we consider the financial disparities experienced by our LGBTQ+ students, particularly our queer and trans Black, Indigenous and other students of color, we must work to create inclusive and affordable college experiences. This recognition for Eastern Washington University serves as a reminder that queer-friendly and queer-affirming spaces don’t only exist in large metropolitan cities, or universities—they exist where dedicated professionals, administrations and leadership have intentionally created said spaces.
