Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau surveys every household in America on demographics such as age and race. The results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states and communities each year. The services you depend on every day are impacted, from health clinics to fire departments; from schools to roads and highways. It is important that every member of the EWU community is counted.
Every household will be mailed an invitation to participate. Although the invite will come to your mailbox, you will be given instructions to complete the questionnaire online—making it a simple task to complete while you are practicing COVID-19 social distancing. The 2020 Census is a short survey containing 10 questions and should only take about 10 minutes.
What You Will be Asked:
- Address (rent/own)
- Phone number
- Count of each person at that address
- Name
- Gender
- Age and date of birth
- Race
- Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin
- Whether someone lives somewhere else
- Relationship
Please note that you are NOT asked to give your social security number or your citizenship. Beware of scams in which a person claiming to be a census taker asks for sensitive, personal information.
How to Participate:
- Faculty, staff and students who live off-campus, you will receive the invitation to participate at your current residence. Students, this is where you should be counted, rather than your permanent address (unless you are living there while attending Eastern).
- If you have roommates, coordinate with them to determine if one person will respond for all of the people living in the residence, or if you will each respond individually.
- Coordinate with your family. Your parents should only count you on their census questionnaire if you are living at home.
- For students who live in a residence hall, you will not receive the invitation in the mail. Rather, EWU Housing and Residential Life representatives will help you answer and submit the questionnaire on a paper form. You will receive additional instructions from the staff in your residence hall.
Please help ensure that we have a complete Census 2020 count! We cannot afford to miss out on the services our communities need.
