Dear Eagle Family and Friends:
As we head into spring, we enter celebration season at Eastern. Every week, it seems, we’re honoring myriad student and faculty achievements. And we look forward to upcoming events such as our annual Research and Creative Works Symposium, Giving Joy Day on Eastern’s 138th birthday, and the Big Sky basketball tournament and Hall of Fame event in Boise—all while we travel at breakneck pace toward commencement.
In the midst of this celebratory season, our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected by COVID-19/Coronavirus. EWU is taking active steps to keep our campus community safe and healthy in light of the threat. As part of our early preparedness plan, we launched an online resource at ewu.edu/coronavirus for students and their families, faculty and staff. The site includes prevention tips, FAQs, and more. We continue to monitor the situation and are regularly posting updated information to the webpage.
At my President’s Regional Advisory Council meeting in February, we welcomed newly elected officials to the group, including our new Spokane mayor Nadine Woodward and Spokane Valley’s new mayor Ben Wick (and Eagle alumnus). Shane Brickner, Liberty Lake’s new mayor (and Eagle alumnus) was unable to join us—but we gave him a big shout-out as well.
This past fall, we introduced a highly successful Eastern Edge event focused on attracting and retaining women in STEM fields. This spring, we’ll bring that event to the Tri-Cities and couple it with the official signing of an innovative partnership agreement with Columbia Basin College.
This spring, also, we’re finalizing plans for moving computer science, visual communication design, electrical engineering, and computer engineering into the Catalyst Building in Spokane (pictured below). We look forward to a grand opening! Fall 2020 is right around the corner.
Thank you all for your interest in and support of EWU. We couldn’t succeed without so many people working together. I hope you enjoyed our February Valentine—a little “thank you” for your commitment to Eastern and our students.
