Message from the President: Veterans Day

Dear Campus Community,

On behalf of the entire university community, I would like to express my gratitude to our EWU veterans and their families as the nation celebrates Veterans Day on Nov. 11 to honor those who have served our country.

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance and, in 1938, Nov. 11 became a national holiday. Then in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name to Veterans Day in order to honor veterans of all American wars.

With more than 450 Eastern students who are Veterans, and countless faculty and staff who have served our country, EWU’s appreciation for our veterans is reflected every day by our commitment to support them on this campus and in our community. Veterans bring unique leadership skills and life experiences to this university that no one else can provide.

Please take time this Veterans Day to connect with a friend, family member or neighbor who has served our country, as recognizing the daily sacrifices they made has never been more important.

Several national level organizations are hosting 2020 Veterans Day virtual events due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Here is a list of activities: https://www.blogs.va.gov/VAntage/80496/organizations-offer-national-level-veterans-day-virtual-events/

Again, thanks to all who have served and we hope you all have a safe and happy Veterans Day.
