In Memoriam: Holt Brewer


Former EWU track and field star Leonard Holt Brewer died on April 18, 2020. He was 92.

Brewer competed in the 1948 Olympic Trials and is still the school record holder in the 220 yard dash (21.2) and fifth in the 100 (9.6). He also played basketball and football for Eastern and was inducted into the Eastern Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.


According to Brewer’s obituary, after attending Eastern he served in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he was an honorable tank commander and a Purple Heart recipient. He married his wife, Barbara Ortolf, in 1954 and the couple soon settled in Toppenish, Washington where they farmed and owned Barb’s Drive In.
