Message from President Cullinan Regarding Campus Safety

Dear Campus Community:

I was deeply saddened and disturbed to learn about racially charged acts of vandalism in the Cheney community this week. This behavior is not acceptable. While the incidents did not occur on campus, I’ve instructed the EWU Police Department to support the Cheney Police Department in their ongoing investigation.

As a member of the Cheney community, where many of our students, faculty, and staff also live, I am committed to ensuring that our campus and this community are safe places where students, and all of us, can learn, work, and live without fear.

I’ve also asked my executive leadership team to intensify their ongoing outreach and advocacy efforts to support anyone on campus who may be affected by these incidents. And I’ve asked leadership to continue bolstering support and training programs across campus and in our community.

Eastern Washington University will not waiver in its commitment to diversity and inclusion. We will not tolerate acts of hatred and violence in our community.

Many thanks to all of you who help to make our campus and community welcoming and safe places for us all.

Mary Cullinan
