Commencement 2019

On June 15, we graduated more than 3,500 students in beautiful ceremonies at the Spokane Arena. Our commencement speaker was Mandy Manning, Eastern alumna, who was named National Teacher of the Year. She teaches in the Newcomer Center at Ferris High School where teens who don’t have a high school diploma from their home country study English language, reading, mathematics, and computers.

At our ceremonies, Mandy Manning spoke about living in Armenia when she was in the Peace Corps. Experiencing life without amenities such as running water and heated rooms helped her understand the profound importance of personal relationships over external comfort in creating balance and happiness. She urged graduates to value the people over the things in their lives. Inspiring!

It was inspiring, also, to see so many students heading on to the next stage, the next chapter: so many graduates who will be the next generation of teachers, business and health professionals, scientists and engineers, creative thinkers and leaders in our communities. Eastern is truly transforming lives.

Watch the commencement video that got students on their feet and excited for the ceremony.

Summertime and the Living is… Busy

And now it’s summer! People always ask whether anything happens on campus in summer. Are we actually open? Well, of course! More than 6,000 students are taking summer classes. Campus is buzzing with young people attending music and athletic camps and an array of summer programs. The impressive new Interdisciplinary Science Center is taking shape. Facilities folks are brightening up our buildings and taking care of our beautiful campus grounds. Faculty are doing research and planning classes. And we’re all busy making plans for the fall.

It’s going to be another awesome, exciting academic year. I look forward to sharing our Eagle news with you all.

Have a wonderful summer.
