This organization is a non-profit organization hospital. They accept donations and charities but they never charge their patients for their care. They focus mainly on child health when it comes to catastrophic diseases and cancers.

St. Jude’s is a research hospital, that focuses on pediatric treatment for major diseases such as leukemia and other cancers. The hospital costs nearly 3 million dollars a day to run, but they never charge patients for their care. They are more focused on helping the patients rather than collecting their money at a time in need.

You can fundraise, get involved, donate or volunteer at this organization. They have lots of ways you can raise money for the organization such as, video game streaming, at your job, through fitness activities, and many other ways you can help.

Cards for Hospitalized Kids

The purpose of Cards for Hospitalized Kids is to provide handwritten cards of encouragement for children who are in the hospital. Many of these children have chronic or life-threatening illnesses. Ultimately, the founder of this organization’s aim is to uplift these children with simple words of encouragement.

This organization has sent over 14,000 cards of encouragement to more than 150 hospitals nationwide. The cards are created by local and national volunteers. Cards can be sent individually or through communities such as churches and sport groups. The cards help children see that there are people in the world who care. Children are encouraged to know that they are not only supported by their families and friends, but by other children and adults around the globe. This organization has been in existence for over 11 years, and it continues to impact hospitalized children on a national level.

Teachers and their students can easily partner with the “Cards for Hospitalized Kids” organization. Teachers can help students write and create encouraging cards for the numerous hospitalized children around the world. Once the students write these cards, the teacher can mail them to the “Card for Hospitalized Kids” address. This organization provides personal stories from card recipients. Therefore, when partnering with this organization, teachers can show these stories to their students. This helps students conceptualize what they are doing and understand that their cards are being sent to real children that are just like them.

Seattle Children’s Hospital

Seattle Children’s, formerly Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, formerly Children’s Orthopedic Hospital, is a children’s hospital in the Laurelhurst neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. The hospital specializes in the care of infants, children, teens, and young adults aged 0–21 in several specialties.

If you partner with Seattle Children’s Hospital, you are providing other students who are in the hospital to connect with other students their age. This organization is continuously improving outcomes. Improving outcomes is at the forefront of the work this hospital provides to bring hope, care and cures to every patient in need. Seattle Children’s improves its outcomes through innovation. They create, develop and implement new processes and services to provide the best care for their patients.

I provided a service with a 7th-grade class and we made friendship bracelets for children who are sick and admitted to Seattle Children's Hospital in Seattle Washington. Making these friendship bracelets provided the service of lifting up children's spirits who are in the hospital. When children are admitted to the hospital, they do not get to see their friends. So, making bracelets for them is letting them know other children think about them, care about them, and are rooting for them.

Another idea a teacher could do to provide service to Seattle Children's is by providing a donation, you can have students make books of their own interest. Students can also make crafts for uplifting decorations a child can display in their hospital room. For example, a paper flower, a Japanese lantern, or a motivation quote.

Mid-Valley Hospital & Clinic

Student Contributor -S. Kendrick
Mid-Valley Hospital is a general hospital and clinic that promotes not only their hard work in healthcare but the leadership role their hospital plays. Along with being a hospital, they offer many educational opportunities for both their staff and outside healthcare workers to further their education in their field.

This organization makes a difference in many ways, not only within healthcare but overall, around the community in Omak, Washington. There are many opportunities that the organization has set for volunteer work and ways that they would be able to help in the community and within the hospital.

Teachers and students could partner with this organization to make a difference in a couple different ways. The one that I had experience with was delivering letters to the nurses from students, that was thanking them for all their hard work through covid and everyday what they go through.

Shriners Hospital

The purpose of the organization is to provide compassionate and innovative care, conduct research, and offer educational opportunities. Shriners Children’s is a hospital that provides personalized care to children all over the world. They do this by achieving their purpose as stated above.

This organization makes a difference by helping children all around the world who have diseases that are difficult to diagnose, but once they are diagnosed to the best of the doctors’ knowledge, the organization works tirelessly to find a cure for each and every disease. In the meantime, they do everything in their power to lessen the pain and suffering of these children, as well as their families. Teachers should consider partnering with them because not only can they and their students make a tremendous impact on the patients at Shriners, but this provides a lesson in humility and caring for others for the students, having a great dual purpose.

Teachers and students could partner with Shriners in so many different ways. One way that is super fun and meaningful for both the students participating and the patients receiving, is making friendship bracelets. This brings out a little bit of creativity in the students and would brighten the day of any child to receive it. Who doesn’t love receiving something as special as a friendship bracelet? There are so many art projects that students could do and donate to the hospital; the list is endless.

Providence Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital

March 17, 2020 1 Comment

Student Contributor -Z. Romero Becker
Providence’s Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital works with medical specialists to serve the Inland Northwest. Sacred Heart hosts Spokane’s only pediatric intensive care, psychiatry, hematology and oncology programs, as well as specialized trauma care for children with emergency medical needs.

As the largest regional pediatric hospital, many students in our classrooms who have chronic or acute medical issues have spent time inside Sacred Heart. In order to meet the needs of their patients, the non-profit hospital partners with other non-profit organizations such as Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Starlight Foundation, Candlelighters, Rypien Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Inland Northwest, Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, and more.

My kindergarten class wrote get well soon cards for the children of the oncology ward. They wrote sentences of encouragement and drew a picture for patients their age in the hospital. I have a personal connection to one of the staff members in this ward, so I was able to get feedback on the cards.

Other ideas could be:

Fundraising or holding a drive for the hospital Wish List of needed items
Making gifts (friendship bracelet, paper flowers, writing a book) for the patients
Older students could volunteer on site in the hospital in various capacities
