The second harvest food bank wants to tackle hunger one person at a time. They bring community resources together to feed people in need by empowerment, education and partnership. They provide more than 2.5 million pounds of donated food in the Pacific Northwest. The 2nd Harvest Food Bank is fighting hunger and feeding hope.

2nd HarvestThe 2nd Harvest Food Bank has supplied to 250 other food banks, meal centers and other programs. In donating money to the food bank, just one dollar provides 5 meals. They have mobile market and other programs that operate very efficiently with almost 99% of expenses going directly back to help hungry people. In one week the 2nd Harvest Food Bank provides meals of 55,000 people each week. This organization has been a leading network of hunger relief since 1971. They support our local communities in needs. Teachers could partner with this organization to help students realize the importance of meals and the gift of giving back to the local community.

There are many ways students and teachers can partner with the 2nd Harvest Food Bank. They can give money, donate food, volunteer, and even hold an online fundraiser. Ways to incorporate this into a classroom or school in order to really make a difference for families are class competitions, where classes compete against one another to see who can raise the most food and money donations. Then have students actually deliver to 2nd Harvest Food Bank and volunteer to sort food or help in the warehouse where the food is stored.

Hello, I am a student teacher at Greenacres Elementary School. This school is an urban area school, I teach a third-grade class of 18 students. I also wanted to work with Second Harvest food bank in spokane. I love the idea of having a competition between classes! I remember in my schooling we would always have competition during food drive time between grade levels. With my personal project, I wanted to actually take a field trip to the food bank with my class and do one of the food sorts that the second harvest holds constantly. similar to your suggestion of having a competition between classes for a food drive after reading your submission I would love to have some of my co-teachers pair up with me and bring their classes and have a competition on which class can sort the most food! I have volunteered with second harvest my entire life. I have seen success in food sort competitions many times. some change I would include in this is a way to record how much each class actually sorted. I would also ask for a form with this information in it so I can create a form to send home with families to let them know what a difference they made in their community.
