“YWCA Spokane is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.” This powerful mission statement is what you first encounter as you enter into the YWCA’s webpage. The YWCA has served the Spokane community for 116 years. They provide a wide variety of services to those who need the help in our community and beyond.
The YWCA serves thousands of women, children and families every year who are dealing with homelessness, domestic violence, and unemployment. They provide clothing, housing and other basic resources to women and children in need. Legal direction and counseling are all provided as well to women who have suffered the effects of domestic violence. They approach economic disadvantage with a slew of programs to help people gain employment. These programs were put into place to eliminate barriers that women may face and help create stability for families. They also offer free preschool services and have an on site ECEAP program. Volunteers are always being accepted because they are a non profit organization.
There are a variety of ways that teachers and students can partner with the YWCA and make a difference in our community. One way a school community can make an impact is to simply run a clothing drive or a toiletries drive. Collecting these items would greatly impact the women and children in our community by meeting their most basic needs. Students could also make affirmation cards for the women who are trying to get gainful employment. Sometimes a simple message can really make an impact on someone’s day. Lastly, teachers could simply volunteer their time. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities listed on the webpage.
