The purpose to this organization is to provide programs that will better the community of Spokane’s health, unity, knowledge, and overall neighborhood needs. This local organization partners with many others in order to get more of their needs met and to reach more families in the city of Spokane, providing for a variety of needs in the area.
This organization makes a difference by providing health services such as WIC that provide educational health services such as breastfeeding support for new mothers, and access to healthy foods to help support families health. This organization also has youth development programs offered for children and teens to participate in fun, active, educational activities in a nurturing environment, in addition to this West Central Community Center has a head start program for eligible children and families to nurture the development and growth of children’s skills and abilities to support school success. This is not all though this organization also helps adults with disabilities to participate in a number of activities throughout the community in stimulating activities. Throughout the year this community center also puts on several events and funds such as mission “School Supplies”, “Coats 4 Kids”, “Neighbor Day”, and “Christmas in July” to name just a few.
There are many ways teachers and students could partner with this organization, students could put on a coat drive for their “Coats 4 Kids” day, as well as donation for school supplies, or a food drive to donate to the charity for West Central to distribute to families in the area that are in need of these supplies. In addition to this, the center is located right down the street from Audubon Elementary where students could easily take a walking tour to visit the adults that are disabled to enrich their lives a little, or to even just be talked to by the staff informing students on the importance of cultivating community and the power of giving.
