The project was done with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and the students created a huge thank you card as a class to give to the police officers to thank them for all they do for our community. In return, the police officers took a picture with them holding the card and I showed the class how much the police officers appreciated the card and loved the kind act of service.
With the group of students, I started out by telling them what police officers do for our community to keep us all safe and how they serve our community. I then explained that it’s important to show police officers our respect and gratitude for what they do for us. As a class we made a huge thank you card for the Spokane Sheriff’s department. Each student cut out a heart and wrote a few sentences on it that expressed their gratitude and then they each glued their hearts on the card. I personally delivered the card to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and got a picture of a few of the officers holding the card. The next day I showed the class the picture and how much they loved the card and appreciated. This is powerful for kids because they learn about how important police officers are, do a service for them, and then get to see how it made an impact.
The project went amazing and the students loved it. I was going to have a police officer come into the class and talk to the students about what they do daily for the community and then we would make the thank you card, but that ended up not happening. Instead, I told them everything they do for the community. My advice would be to have one of the police officers come to the class and talk with the students and make it even more engaging and fun for the students.
