My 2nd-grade class worked together to raise socks for the residents at Guardian Angel Homes. The project lasted 2 weeks, and the students gathered as many socks as possible and they brought them to class so we could deliver them to the organization. The students felt like they were apart of something big, and they enjoyed gathering socks to those in need.
The sock drive that the students participated in lasted 2 weeks. Throughout the course of the fundraiser, the students brought in over 100 pairs of socks, which was enough to provide socks to every resident at Guardian Angel Homes. We created a class card that every student got to sign and we took a class picture that we attached to the card that we gave to the organization. I brought the socks to Guardian Angel Homes and they placed it in the main hall of their facility and left a note saying the students from Liberty Creek raised enough socks for everyone to take one. The feedback I received from the organization was that the residents were very excited and they appreciated the students for taking their time to think of them. The students felt powerful during this project because they felt like they were able to make a difference for someone in need.
The project went well, and the students were engaged the whole time. They were excited every time they saw someone bring in a pack or two of socks because they knew they were getting closer to the overall goal of collecting 117 socks. The students wanted to get enough so every resident could have a pair. If I was to do this project again, I would do it slightly differently. I would try and make it a classroom challenge and break them up in teams. The reason I would do it this way is that not all students participated and they relied on the efforts of their peers. If there was more of a competition aspect, I think more kids would have contributed. The sock drive was a success, but this way it could have been more or a success.
