Pillowcase Dresses

Student Contributor -Vanessa Mofford
My project was to make dresses out of pillow cases for little girls. With this project a group of kids each partner with other kids then they worked together to make these dresses. The organization that I partnered with was the Vanessa Behan Crises Nursery.

For this project the kids were to get with partners in the room and pick out a pillow case design that they liked. They would mark on the pillow case where they would make their cuts. The ribbon used to tighten the top of the dress and tie in a bow to hold it up is the first piece that is cut off of the top.
This is a service to the community because after these dresses are created they are getting donated to the organization. This helps children get a a cute dress for summer that they may not be able to afford other wise and in a unique way.
This was a powerful for the kids to do because we sat them down and explained to them that a lot of kids don’t always have parents who have the money to get them new clothes. With summer coming closer this was a great way for these kids to make a difference for kids who are growing up less fortunate.

I had to modify how we sewed the dresses. I was not able to sew them with the kids because I did not have a machine so I had the kids cut and trace the pillow cases and cut them and hand sew and just did the stitching far apart. It took a bit longer than I expected so I would for sure do it with an older group of kids next time.
