This project is designed to get the students to learn about recycling, why we do it, and how we can implement it in our school/organization. I partnered up with one of the Spokane community centers ran by CCS called the North East Community Center. We started the project by reading a few mentor texts about recycling and the different ways we can do it. After this we created our own recycling bins for paper and cans.
After reading Recycle Every Day! By Nancy Elizabeth Wallace and One Plastic Bag by Miranda Paul we created our own recycling bins out of cardboard, acrylic paints, and markers. We then let other classrooms know about project and how we were going to utilize them in our school. This project will continue to serve the community by using the cans that we save to take to a recycle place that gives money for cans. I will then take it upon myself to use the money raised to buy food and create a free pantry in the main entrance, this is so that families can grab food as needed when they leave. In addition to this, the project counts as in-kind for the organization, this means that they record my hours which then brings more funding back into the program.
For the most part things are working well, but I think that it would be best to read the mentor text to all the classes, get smaller boxes to put in each classroom, then at the end of the week empty them out into the large recycling bin in the parking lot. My advice would be to try and get more people involved so that the impact effects more of the community within the organization.
