Autism Speaks

Student Contributor -A. Kane
AutismSpeaks.org is an organization that assists people effected with autism, as well as their families. The organization provides a wide array of resources such as; where to get a diagnosis, schools and special education, advocacy support, adult services, inclusion and community activities, and so much more.

Some examples of obstacles that the organization has assisted people overcome are: gaining independence in the form of learning to drive or independent living, graduating from college, getting a job, learning to speak, and the list goes on

Partnering with Autism Speaks is a very beneficial organization to work with because it gives support to not only those effected, but also to the family, making sure that students with the disorder don’t get left behind. Bringing a partnership to this organization would be a great piece to include in a classroom to teach students that not everyone is created the same and we should take the time to learn about one another.

There are many ways to get involved with this organization. On their website are links to fundraising, advocating, and partnering. I personally have participated in an Autism Speaks walk were the money participants paid to walk in the event went straight to the organization.
