A group of kids that I work with from the Airway Heights Parks and Recreation center went on a field trip to Turnbull. We learned about the different type of animals and made food baskets for certain animals. The kids will learn about a local wildlife place and the difference they can make with nature and the earth.
At Turnbull we learned about different type of birds, some foxes, fish, and a few other crawling creates like snakes or lizards that live at Turnbull. We put food baskets together for about 5 different animals and the worker from Turnbull who helped us then handed the baskets out once we left. The bird’s packages had seeds, fruits, and veggies. The foxes had more meat with smaller fruits and veggies in them. The kids learned that they eat a lot of the same foods as the animals and were helping the animals stay alive with being provided food. They felt important and helped the animals continue to live. Most of the kids were so inspired and wanted to volunteer someday at Turnbull to keep helping and providing for the nature and animals that live there.
The project went very well and made the kids want to come back and be more useful in saving the natural habitats that live at Turnbull. This made the kids want to continue to help the environment in other ways and pick up trash to save the planet all these animals live on. To improve, I would want to give more of a lesson before the field trip and have a debrief after the field trip. I asked the kids a few questions after the trip to see how much they enjoyed it and why they want to help the planet going forward, but did not complete an actual assignment associate with it.
