EWU McNair Scholar Brendan Roof Honored with Nick Begich Scholarship

Congratulations to EWU McNair Scholar Brendan Roof! Brendan has been awarded the Nick Begich Scholarship. This scholarship was created to carry on the ideals of the late Congressman Nicholas J. Begich from Alaska, who came to the state in 1956 as a teacher and believed that education was both a right and a privilege, one that must be available to all as a key to self-realization. Since inception, the Fund has provided over $300,000 in support to exceptional Alaskans, helping them realize their educational goals. Successful NBSIF scholarship candidates have demonstrated an interest in careers in public service or education.

Brendan is a first-generation student majoring in English Studies. He was raised in Ketchikan, Alaska and Memphis, Tennessee. He is interested in researching the pre-colonial traditions, customs, and socio-political history across Philippine literature, familial dynamics and themes in Pan-Asian literature, and the socio-economic influence of the Filipino diaspora. He completed is 2023 McNair Summer Research Internship, which focused on the seminal work of Filipino writer and activist Carlos Bulosan, America Is In The Heart, under the mentorship of Dr. Paul Lindholdt. He is currently applying to graduate school and study abroad opportunities.

EWU McNair is proud of Brendan and happy to see his intellectual curiosity, high aspirations, and hard work rewarded!
