Little Free Library was first started by Todd H. Bol who later created a non-profit organization.
This organization inspires a love for reading. It invites everybody to take a book and leave a book. The purpose of this organization is to provide age-appropriate books for children all over the world. Little Free Library helps maintain little libraries all over the world.
This organization makes a difference because some families don’t have the money to invest in books and resources to help their children improve and strengthen their reading skills. By starting a little free library, you are helping the community and other children improve their reading skills. The Little Free library also promotes a better community and it has a positive impact on the neighborhoods where the libraries are set up. This is a project that would be done whole group because it could be expensive to start. You can set this library up anywhere and that could be something that you decide as a class. Little Free Library does provide free or discounted books to start the library once it’s built.
The first step to start a Little Free Library is to buy a kit or prebuilt library or to build your own library. If you build your own library all you have to do is go onto their website and register it. The kits and prebuilt libraries run from $150 to $500. Have students raise money through bake sales, creating calendar art or hosting a family night as a class. Students work together to raise the money to buy the kits or prebuilt libraries or the supplies to make their own. You could have family volunteers to come into the classroom and help with the building depending on the grade level. Children work together and experience a hands-on activity that helps the community. Little Free Library is great for all ages.
