Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I play Intramural Sports?

All Campus Rec programs exist to offer our students the chance for improved physical fitness, increased self esteem and self-confidence, interact socially with other students, to get away from the rigors of daily student life but most importantly, to have fun outside the classroom. Studies show conclusively that students that engage in recreational programming trend to be better students in the classroom, more productive in their post-college career, better equipped to deal with the rigors of the outside world and learn about themselves along the way.  Participating in activities such as Intramural Sports will help make your stay at EWU a much more enjoyable and rewarding experience.  What are you doing after class?

Want to play but don’t know enough people to form a team?

If you’re new on campus and want to get involved in I.M. Sports but don’t know enough people to make your own team, go to to the Intramural Sports site on www.ewu.edu and click on the “FREE AGENT INFORMATION” link.  Many teams are in need of players and any student making the effort can usually find a team to join with no problem.

Do you want to play but not if it means adopting a “win at all costs” attitude?

The I.M. program maintains a basic core value of participation over competition and we encourage all students, regardless of skill or experience, to take part as a way to connect with your fellow Eagles along the way.

Who is eligible to participate?

The I.M. program is open to all currently enrolled EWU Students, Faculty and Staff at no cost to students for unlimited participation, including league and special event play.

Can Faculty and Staff participate?

Absolutely, one of the program goals is to integrate students with Fac/Staff in a social, outside-the-classroom setting and I.M. sports is the perfect option.  Fac/Staff do pay a $15 per quarter fee (an annual fee is an option), all for unlimited participation.  To register, go to

How much does it cost to participate?

I.M. Sports are funded through Service and Activity fees so player fees are zero!

How can I join a team?

Students can join a team on www.imleagues.com any time during the regular season.  Once playoffs start, rosters are set.  There are three ways to join a team:

  • You can register as a FREE AGENT and hope to be picked up by an existing team.  Teams looking for players have access to Free Agent profiles and will contact them if desired
  • Look for any team titled I.M. Free Agent All-Stars, which are teams created by the I.M. Coordinator for anyone to join
  • Go to the games at the times you’d like to play, look for teams that need players and ask the team captain if you can join

How competitive is the program?

Many leagues offer Comp(Competitive) and Rec(Recreational) levels of competition and teams have a choice of which level they wish to play at. Teams are always trying to win their games, but the value is placed on good sportsmanship, social interaction and especially fun for all.  How do I get on a team?

How much time is required to participate?

I.M. leagues generally play one day/night each week in a 3-5 week league schedule, followed by a single-elimination championship tournament.  Teams generally do not practice and just show up to play their games, so the time required to play is minimal.

Can I play on multiple teams?

Students may play on as many teams as their schedule and desire allows for.  The only limitation is that a player may play on only one team per sport, per day.  Many students play in multiple activities as they find I.M. participation a great way to relieve the stress of college life and just have fun!

What playing format do the leagues follow?

Leagues play a 3/4/5 game regular season schedule followed by an end of the season single elimination tournament in which league champions are awarded I.M. Championship t-shirts. All teams, regardless of win-lost records, qualify for the playoffs with the exception of those not achieving the mandatory 3.0 Team Sportsmanship average or those teams with more than one forfeit.

Is the program safe?

Player safety is our top priority in the I.M. program. Given the fact that hundreds of games are played annually in the I.M. program, injuries are inevitable. However, all I.M. contests have a fully equipped, First Aid Attendant to insure that all contests are safe and any injuries are handled immediately in a safe and professional manner.

Need a job, want to earn some “spending money” while at school?

Become an I.M. Sports Official by watching for hiring announcements on “Handshake”, EWU Student Employment’s job site.  Most officials are hired in the fall with spots filled in the winter and spring as needed.

Although officiating is not for everyone, if you possess basic knowledge of the rules of the sport you wish to officiate in, the I.M. program can use you. Officiating experience is not required but is helpful.  If you have questions about becoming an I.M. Official, stop by the I.M. Office in URC 201 and see the I.M. Director.
