Ride-Alongs

Police Ride-Alongs

EWU Police patrol car

The EWU Police Department invites members of our community to participate in our ride-along program.  Preference will be given to those affiliated with police programs in some capacity (i.e. candidates for hire, individuals enrolled in law enforcement academic courses, officers from other jurisdictions or functions associated with EWUPD, etc.).

Safety is the foremost consideration in approving a ride-along and while every attempt will be made to accommodate interested persons, any applicant may be disqualified without cause. To ensure the safety of the rider and the officer, those requesting a ride along will be required to have the ability to participate in a ride along without assistance.  In order to do a ride-along, a records check will be conducted. Criminal history may be grounds for denial of a ride-along.

Ride-along times are 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m on most days of the week, with certain exceptions. Scheduling is at the discretion of the shift supervisor, based on availability, at least one week after the date of application. Ride-alongs last for approximately 4 hours.  If the applicant is under 18 years of age, a parent/guardian must be present to complete the ride-along form.

Any person approved for a ride-along is required to be suitably dressed in collared shirt, blouse or jacket, slacks and shoes.  Sandals, T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and ripped or torn blue jeans are not permitted.  Hats and ball caps will not be worn in the police vehicle.  A ride-along may be refused to anyone not properly dressed.
