From our EWU Army ROTC archives comes this newspaper clipping of Kenneth W. Attebery being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant 50 years ago back in 1970. Back then EWU was known as Eastern Washington State College. Attebery was commissioned as an officer into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. According to the caption he was a graduate of West Valley High School and majored in Urban Planning. His wife Diane and his mother Phyllis pinned the gold bars on his uniform. Does any of our Fighting Eagles alumni remember Kenneth Attebery?

I just stumbled on this site as I was researching Eastern’s web presence for information about my father Uri Attebery who attended Cheney State Normal School for two years, 1916 and 1917. A 1917 graduate and WW1 veteran, he appeared in the school’s journal mainly in the sports section as a football and basketball letterman. He attended CSNS 50 years before I attended EWSC. As best I can determine from my research we both lived in Monroe Hall. I had a career in urban planning and business facility management in Kitsap County WA. My father taught and was superintendent of schools at numerous Palouse and Spokane are schools over his 41 year career. Three of my close West Valley friends, Rick Allen, Larry Bieber and Dan Hunter were also ROTC graduates. Ken Attebery, 1970 Geography/Urban Planning.

Yep. Ken lived for two years at Eastern in Mary A. Monroe Hall while it was a men’s dorm. He graduated from Eastern and served in the Army in Panama. He spent much of his post Army career in Bremerton. Here’s a post from there:
BREMERTON: Ken Attebery named port CEO, capping 18-year career

With the Port of Bremerton headed in the right direction, its commissioners found no reason to change drivers.
They promoted Ken Attebery to chief executive officer Tuesday. Attebery, the longtime deputy executive director, has managed the port since Dick Brandenburg retired Dec. 31. He has worked there for 18 years.
“I’m looking forward to keeping this great program that the port commission has set in gear going, implementing their vision,” Attebery said.
Commissioners Cheryl Kincer, Bill Mahan and Mary Ann Huntington considered looking outside for a replacement. That would be futile, they decided. Nobody could duplicate Attebery’s attributes.
It was an easy choice, Mahan said.
“First of all, he’s shown he has the capability of handling the job the past two months as the interim chief executive,” Mahan said. “Secondly, he has such a tremendous wealth of information in his head about the port and the community.
“Besides all of that, he’s a nice guy and fun to work with.”
Each summer, Ken and a number of other former Eastern grads and attendees meet in Leavenworth, WA in an annual reunion, visiting, swimming, golfing.
