Fighting Eagles Cadets Get Into Action During Leadership Lab

On the 4th of February 2021, the Eastern Washington University (EWU) Fighting Eagles Battalion conducted training on Actions On Contact (AOC) and Linear Danger Area (LDA) crossings at the Cheney Waterworks property near the EWU campus.  The Cadets began the training by drawing equipment and holding accountability formation.

Cadets draw equipment before leadership lab.

During the training the Cadets used movement formations such as the squad file, squad line and squad column fire team wedge to move through the wooded terrain.  They also used the movement techniques traveling, traveling overwatch and bounding overwatch which are utilized in different situations depending on time restrictions, maneuverability, and if enemy contact is likely or not. It is ultimately up to the squad leader to determine which is used.  During movement the cadets were then engaged by an enemy opposing force to get them to practice their react to contact drills.

LDA’s come up when doing large movements. A few examples of these are power line areas, or even large grassy fields where cover and concealment is limited. As leaders in the army, Cadets are required to know how to manage these areas without putting soldiers’ lives in harms way.

All of the skills the Cadets trained on are important to master to prepare them for ROTC Advanced Camp held each summer at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. Advanced Camp is expected to occur this summer and our Cadets will be ready to excel.  Eagle Strong!

EWU Campus in Winter

The recent snowfall in the Cheney area has the campus of Eastern Washington University currently looking quite picturesque.  For anyone staying in the Cheney or Spokane areas this holidy break, should consider taking a walk around campus and enjoy the serene winter scenery.  For those that can’t make it to campus I have a number of photos below for people to view below.

Eastern Washington University Army ROTC Cadets Deliver 704 Pound Food Donation to Cheney Food Bank

Turkey Trot 2019

Great job by our Eastern Washington University (EWU) Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Cadets that supported the food drive for the local Cheney Food Bank.  The EWU Army ROTC program gathered 613 items that weighed a total of 704 pounds.  Then on Thanksgiving day, seven Cadets that remained in the Spokane area over the holiday break, delivered the food to the Cheney Food Bank.  After delivering the food they then participated in the Turkey Trot fundraiser where they rucked 5 kilometers around Cheney.  Big thank you to Cadets Michael Beier, Josh Browning, Amayia Roberts, Kaylie Watters, Andrew Norby, Liam Hewey, and Nelson Hergert for supporting the Turkey Trot.   It was a great event that once again demonstrated the positive impact our EWU Army ROTC Cadets are having in the local community.

Throwback Thursday: Eastern Washington Football Back in 1903

With the Eastern Washington University football team moving on to play in the FCS championship game, it is only fitting to show a historical photo this week of EWU football back in 1903.  Besides how well dressed everyone is, something I else I noticed was the people watching the game with horses and wagons.   I wonder if the people in the wagons were early tailgaters?

Back then the football team was called the Cheney Normal Football Team since the university was named the “State Normal School at Cheney”.  The below Google Maps image the gold rectangle shows approximately where the field would have been located at where the JFK Library and Williamson Hall are at.  The ROTC office would not have existed back then since the program was founded back in 1952.

Thank you to Jerry Mellick and Jerry Jantz for sending the photo.
