Welcome back to our Student & Alumni Spotlight series! This time, we’re focusing our spotlight on Drew Hill, President and CEO of Excelsior Wellness. Drew first graduated from EWU with a BS in Recreation and Leisure Services and minors in Music and Psychology in 2004; later, Drew returned to EWU to pursue his MS in Applied Psychology: Mental Health Counseling, with which he graduated in 2008. Now that’s what we call an #Eag4Life!
“As President and CEO of Excelsior Wellness, my career has been dedicated to pioneering visionary, transparent, and innovative leadership within the healthcare sector,” Drew says. “What I enjoy most about my career is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Being able to lead a team that is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of our community brings me immense fulfillment. I find great satisfaction in overcoming challenges, innovating solutions, and seeing the positive impact our work has on individuals and families…Overall, the ability to combine my passion for healthcare with a commitment to serving others is what truly drives and inspires me in my career.”
Drew describes his academic journey at EWU as “diverse” and “reflective of [his] various interests,” which included music composition, psychology, and recreation & leisure service management during his undergraduate years. “While my initial focus was on music composition, my studies in psychology provided me with valuable insights into human behavior and motivation,” he says. “After completing my bachelor’s degree, I gained experience in team building, leadership skills, and business management, primarily through roles that involved working with youth in character development organizations. These experiences exposed me to the needs of young people and families, motivating me to deepen my understanding of mental health and counseling.
As a result, Drew pursued a Master of Science in Applied Developmental Psychology, with a focus in Mental Health Counseling. “This decision was driven by my desire to better serve the youth and families I had encountered during my earlier experiences,” Drew says. “Through this program, I gained the knowledge and skills necessary to address the mental health challenges faced by young people and their families, ultimately preparing me for my current role as President and CEO of Excelsior Wellness.”
“While my career path may not have been what I initially envisioned during my college years, each step along the way has contributed to my growth and development as a healthcare leader,” Drew says. “My diverse educational background and experiences have uniquely prepared me to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others, and I am grateful for the journey that has led me to where I am today.”
Drew has plenty of advice for his fellow Eags, regardless of graduation year, area of study, and current professional trajectory: “Embrace curiosity, pursue opportunities for growth, and never underestimate the power of resilience,” he says. “Your time at Eastern Washington University has equipped you with knowledge and skills that will serve you well in whatever path you choose to pursue. Be open to exploring different avenues and don’t be afraid to take risks. Remember that failure is often just a stepping stone to success, so don’t let setbacks deter you from chasing your dreams.”
Drew also highlighted the importance of networking and cultivating professional relationships, especially while still at EWU. “Your fellow Eags can be valuable allies and sources of support as you navigate your career and personal aspirations,” Drew says. “Cultivate mentorship relationships with those who inspire you, and be generous with your own time and expertise in helping others along their journey.”
“Finally, never lose sight of the importance of self-care and maintaining a healthy work-life balance,” Drew says. “Your well-being is essential for long-term success and fulfillment. Take time to recharge, pursue hobbies and interests outside of your professional life, and prioritize your mental and physical health. Above all, trust in your abilities and stay true to your values. With dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous learning, you have the potential to achieve great things and make a positive impact in the world. Go Eags!”
