Student & Alumni Spotlight: Dominique Payne, ’20

This week’s Student & Alumni Spotlight focuses on Dominique Payne, ‘20! Dominique earned her BA in Secondary Education – Health & Fitness and currently works as a physical education teacher at a title 1 high school. “I teach 9th graders the skills and knowledge they need to move with joy and live a healthy life,” Dominique says. She is also the head girls track and field coach.

When asked if she expected to work as a high school teacher after graduation, Dominique said, “Yes and no. In college I knew I wanted to teach, but I was pretty set on teaching elementary school students. When I got placed at a high school for my student teaching, I learned I really enjoy working with older students.”

She also mentioned that building relationships with students through sports participation is one of her favorite things about the job. “I love the relationships I build with my students. They all bring something unique and valuable to our class community. I learn so much from my students. I also really enjoy coaching track and field. Track has been a big part of my life and I love sharing the sport with the students at my school.”

If Dominique could give any career advice to her fellow Eagles, it would be to “be open to trying something new! You never know if you will enjoy an experience until you try it. I’m very glad that I ended up doing my student teaching at the high school level because I learned how much fun it is to teach older grade levels.”
