Many people seem to think the first visit to the Career Center should happen senior year. In our experience, that’s the least effective and most painful way to prepare for success after graduation. Career development is an ongoing, long-term process, and one of the eight core competencies for career readiness, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
We offer resources and services for Eagles at every stage of development:
- Exploring and choosing majors and careers
- Searching for internships and jobs (full or part time)
- Composing and designing resumes and cover letters
- Practicing and refining interview skills
- Choosing and applying to graduate schools
- Utilizing career resources more effectively
Of course, the burning question for most prospective students and their parents is
“Will [insert major here] lead to a good career?”
Yes. Every major provides employable skills and leads to multiple career paths. Don’t just take our word for it, though. Check out “What Can I Do with This Major?” over on the right under “Featured Resources.”
No one, however, can depend on only going to class to be career-ready, no matter what their major is.
Everyone needs a combination of:
- coursework: classes and labs
- applied experience: jobs, internships, service learning, projects, volunteering
- relationship building: networking, extracurriculars, leadership, teamwork
- storytelling skills: verbal and written [always], visual [sometimes]
That may seem like a lot.
You definitely don’t have to do it all at once or without help.
It’s our job to provide you with tools and methods to help you access those experiences, build those relationships, and integrate those communication skills with your academic knowledge. We love our job.
