Group Counseling (with sufficient student interest) Expand

CAPS counseling groups usually form at the beginning of each quarter and typically meet once a week for about ninety minutes. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn, share, and grow with others. Note that most groups require a pre-group interest appointment; to learn more about the group and whether it will meet your particular needs.

Groups will be offered and run based upon student interest.

Please call CAPS at 509.359.2366 if you are interested in group counseling or if you have questions about a particular group. You may be asked to complete some online paperwork. The receptionist can assist you with this process.

Click the button below to complete CAPS online disclosure and client information forms (call CAPS for password). Note that the content of these forms is not monitored. Should you require emergent care, please contact 911 or the 24 Hour Crisis Line at 1-877-266-1818.

CAPS Online Disclosure and Client Information Forms

If you are new to CAPS, please fill out the following three forms:

  • Counseling Services Intake
  • Telemental Health Consent
  • Counseling Objectives.

If you have been seen by a CAPS counselor in the past, please fill out these three forms:

  • CAPS Returning Client
  • Telemental Health Consent
  • Counseling Objectives.

Once the forms are processed, someone from CAPS will call you to schedule an appointment. Please note that these forms are not monitored and processed outside of CAPS office hours.

Tips for Successful Distance Counseling Appointments

  • Choose a confidential location and ensure no one else is present. Do not have a counseling session in a public location.
  • Select an environment with good lighting where your counselor can see you well. Nonverbal signals are a significant part of someone's communication.
  • Ensure your environment is distraction-free and have a plan should you encounter distractions (e.g., a phone call, a pet, or someone interrupts).
  • Be sure you've identified a back-up method for completing your appointment in the event your technology fails.
  • Arrive on time for your appointment. If unable to attend, please cancel in advance. Due to work demands, counselors can only wait briefly for your arrival for TeleMental Health sessions.
Confidentiality and Service Fees Expand

EWU Counseling and Psychological Services' professional staff of counselors, psychologists, and graduate trainees abide by the ethical standards of the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association, as well as state laws regarding confidentiality.

All CAPS records are strictly confidential and do not become part of university records. Information may be released only with the expressed written consent of the student. Exceptions to confidentiality occur when there is a threat of serious harm to self or others.

CAPS services are provided free of charge to all currently enrolled students of Eastern Washington University who have paid the Health and Wellness Fee. Consultation services are available for all EWU community members.

Diversity Statement Expand

Counseling and Psychological Services' staff are committed to promoting inclusion, and the affirmation of diversity in its broadest sense. We strive to provide respectful treatment to people of every background who seek services, train, or work at CAPS. Our staff value the richness brought by the intersections of gender, ethnicity, race, sexual/affectional orientation, age, physical attributes, as well as personal and social characteristics that comprise individual identity.

WE TAKE A STANCE AGAINST DISCRIMINATION AND OPPRESSION IN ANY FORM.

Our center can provide a facilitated space for dealing with the impact of policy and oppression individually or with a group. CAPS staff can offer support if you are experiencing negative treatment, threats, or subtler forms of oppression because of your race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, religious affiliation, or other aspects of your identity.

CAPS is committed to student well-being and resilience, and stands in solidarity with our Black community in supporting needed social change. Please check our social media regularly for options for processing and dialogue with other students, faculty and staff, and let us know how we can best meet your needs as Black students, persons of color, or allies.

Mission Statement Expand

The Mission of Counseling and Psychological Services is to support and promote the emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual health and wellness of students, staff and faculty of Eastern Washington University. To this end, CAPS provides individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and outreach programming for university students, along with consultation services for the entire campus community.
