McNair Scholar Madelyn Brown – Recipient of New Relationship Trust Scholarship and Gingolx Village Scholarships!

Madelyn Brown

Madelyn Brown, 2018 McNair Scholar, is the recipient of two large scholarships from the New Relationship Trust Foundation and the Gingolx Village Government in British Columbia, Canada. Madelyn is a first-generation student majoring in History with a minor in Native Studies. She has just completed a summer research internship with the EWU McNair Scholars' Program focused on Traditional Ecological Knowledge in native communities of the Inland Northwest and the impact of Eurocentric fire suppression policies on forest maintenance. Using primary and secondary sources, data suggests that these policies did not prevent the occurrence of wildfires but increased the frequency and intensity of this phenomenon in the northwest region. Her Faculty Mentors are SimHayKin S. Jack, Ph.C. and Christina Torres García, Ph.D.

A senior this year, Madelyn will complete her undergraduate studies this-coming spring and intends to continue exploring Indigenous Knowledge in graduate school. Congratulations, Madelyn!

EWU McNair Scholars are traveling the world with Gilman

Congratulations to Wendolyn Martinez and Malichi Chukwu, two EWU McNair Scholars and Political Science majors, for receiving the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Our Eagles were selected among the nearly 3000 Gilman core awards from 356 U.S. Institutions for this fall 2018-Summer 2019 study abroad. These two EWU McNair scholars worked closely with the EWU School of Global Learning’s staff to complete the application package. The School of Global Learning is committed to extending student learning beyond the classroom by developing education abroad opportunities that are simultaneously intellectually engaging and financially accessible for students.

Mr. Chukwu will utilize this scholarship to visit Thailand this August 20th. Ms. Martinez will travel to Russia this fall 2019.

Congratulations Eastern McNair Scholars!

McNair Scholar, Lily Ann Long, Awarded the Len Stern Endowed Research Award

We are extremely pleased to announce that Lily Ann Long, Psychology Major and McNair Scholar (2018), has been awarded the Len Stern Endowed Research Award for her research in shame as a function of academic distress in a population of first-generation, low-income minority students.

The Leonard D. Stern Research Award Endowment was established by Dr. Jeffrey Joireman, a student of Dr. Stern’s, to honor the longstanding contribution and mentoring Dr. Stern offered students at EWU and to support and promote high quality undergraduate research that could ultimately lead the recipient to graduate school. This research will be completed during the 2019-2020 academic year with the mentorship of Dr. Ziehnert and Dr. Kolts, and will be funding her travel to the WPA conference in Spring 2020 where she will be lecturing on the findings of her research.

Congratulations, Lily Ann!
