Become a Mentor

This position is for Student Affairs and will report directly to Jasmin Davis.

The EWU Aspire project offers EWU students hands-on opportunities to gain experience in the field of education and engage in community-based learning through near-peer mentoring. Mentors will work together, as a small team, to facilitate weekly in-class sessions throughout the school year. Mentor hours will be spent preparing for weekly content on post-secondary planning and diversity topics, while engaging high school mentees during school-organized college and career readiness events and in professional development sessions.

Aspire mentors duties, under the discretion of the assigned staff, may include, but are not limited to:

  • Completion of EWU Youth Programs Trainings related to working with minors
  • Attend orientation and training sessions prior to on-site visits
  • Prepare for and facilitate weekly content for high school mentees, under the guidance of the Aspire staff
  • Serve as a positive and professional representative of Aspire and EWU when communicating with other students, mentees and local high school partners
  •  Act as a liaison between schools and Aspire while at mentorship events
  • Willing to adhere to school placement site policies while serving
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Demonstrate professionalism

Qualifications

  • Current EWU student
  • Ability to complete and satisfy an EWU and/or Spokane Public Schools background check
  • Experience working with low-income, first-generation students and students of color
  • Reliable transportation
  • Culturally responsive and respectful of diverse backgrounds
  • Reliable, patient, responsive, organized, sensitive to the needs of a diverse population, willing to follow direction, take initiative, and can work independently
