EWU McNair Scholar Edith Melendez Accepted to Northern Arizona University PhD Program

Edith Melendez accepted by Northern Arizona University Doctoral Program in Combined Counseling, School PsychologyCongratulations to EWU McNair Scholar Edith Melendez! Edith has been accepted as a doctoral student at Northern Arizona University in the Combined School/Counseling Psychology program. Edith graduated from EWU in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Developmental Psychology with minors in Psychology and Spanish. As a McNair Scholar, Edith worked with Dr. Shanna Davis on a research project titled Developing a Support Center without Borders: Enhancing Services for Students Without Documentation.

She was then accepted to five graduate programs: San Jose State University, University of Arizona, New Mexico State University, Penn State, Harrisburg, and Oregon State University. She began attending New Mexico State University in the fall of 2018. Edith currently holds an Ed.S. and serves as a licensed school psychologist at the Gadsden Independent School District.

EWU McNair Scholar Lucia Roussa Accepted to NC State PhD Program

Lucia Roussa Accepted to the Doctoral program in Marine, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences at North Carolina State UniversityCongratulations to EWU McNair Scholar Lucia Roussa! Lucia accepted an offer with a competitive support package from North Carolina State University’s Doctoral program in Marine, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences.

Lucia is double majoring in Environmental Science and Biology at EWU. Her research interests include Phycology, marine microbiology, and conservation science in coastal marine ecosystems. In 2021, Lucia participated in an EWU McNair Summer Research Internship under the mentorship of Dr. Camille McNeely, Professor of Biology, where she investigated the relationship between freshwater algal abundance and diversity by analyzing the eutrophication of wetlands in Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. She then went on to work with Dr. Jessica Allen to analyze the phylogeny of freshwater sponges across greater Eastern Washington.

Lucia was one of only 13 interns selected for an internship quantifying Moon Jellyfish (Aurelia labiata) using aerial photographs with CICOES (Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean, and Ecosystem Studies) through the University of Washington under mentor Dr. Julie Keister. Lucia was invited to continue participating in this research.

EWU McNair Scholar Christina Hudson Accepted to Temple University PhD Program

EWU McNair Scholar Christina Hudson Accepted to Temple University PhD ProgramIf you’ve been following along, you may have noticed that in our last two posts about EWU McNair Scholar Christina Hudson, we mentioned that she will begin her PhD studies in Africology and African American Studies at Temple University next fall. We’d like to take this opportunity to officially offer her our congratulations! The Department of Africology and African American Studies at Temple University attracts and produces world-class scholars in this discipline, and has more African American students than any other university in the Northeast. The program’s focus is transgenerational, transcontinental and interdisciplinary.

Christina is a first-generation student double majoring in English studies and Africana studies, and minoring in religious studies. Christina completed an EWU McNair Summer Research Internship in 2021 under the mentorship of Associate Professor Okera Nsombi titled The Characterization of African Religions. Christina serves as the ASEWU Diversity Representative and  recently presented her work at the National Association of African American Studies & Affiliates 2022 Conference, and is a regular contributor to BlackPast.org.

The EWU McNair staff are thrilled for Christina and we know she will develop high quality, impactful research in her PhD program.

EWU McNair Scholar Madelyn Brown Accepted to Multiple PhD Programs

Madelyn Brown accepted to PhD programs at the University of Toronto and University of MinnesotaCongratulations to EWU McNair Scholar Madelyn Brown! Madelyn has been accepted to two more PhD programs, including the University of Toronto, Canada’s leading postsecondary research institution, with a five-year funding package, and the University of Minnesota with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship Six-Year Support Package.

Madelyn has accepted the offer from the University of Minnesota, where she will be advised by Jean O’Brien, an American historian of White Earth Band of Ojibwe ancestry who specializes in northeastern Woodlands American Indian history, and David Chang, a Native Hawaiian historian of indigenous people, colonialism, borders and migration.

Madelyn is a scholar of Indigenous History. In EWU’s McNair program, she worked on her 2019 summer research project with Lecturer SimHayKin S. Jack, a Clinical Cultural Specialist at Colville Confederated Tribes and PhD Candidate at University of California, Davis and Dr. Christina Torres Garcia, now Assistant Professor and Director of the Latino, Latin American Studies Program at Central Washington University. Madelyn’s research focused on the the historic Eurocentric discrimination against [Indigenous] Traditional Ecological Knowledge and its benefits in forest and wildfire management, proposing that that these care techniques, specifically the acceptance of fire as a viable influence in forest health, should be taken into consideration when utilizing preventative measures against human-caused events. While a student at EWU, Madelyn was the recipient of the 2018 Gingolyx Village Government scholarship for academic excellence and a member of both the Native American Student Association and Phi Alpha Theta. Madelyn is currently completing her Masters in History at the University of Oregon.

EWU McNair Scholar Seth McCullough Accepted to Master of Science Program at James Madison University

EWU McNair Scholar Seth McCullough Accepted to Master of Science Program at James Madison University

Congratulations to EWU McNair Scholar Seth McCullough! Seth has been accepted with funding and a teaching assistantship to the Master of Science in Biology program at James Madison University College of Science and Mathematics. In this two year program, students are provided a rigorous experience in research and thesis writing.

Seth is double majoring in Environmental Science and Biology. His research interests include coastal marine ecosystems, restoration ecology, and how climate change is affecting relationships within ecologic communities. Seth completed an EWU McNair Summer Research Internship in 2021 under the mentorship of Dr. Justin Bastow, Assistant Professor of Biology at EWU.

EWU McNair Scholar Madelyn Brown Accepted to University of Georgia PhD Program

Madelyn Brown accepted by the University of Georgia PhD Program in HistoryCongratulations to EWU McNair Scholar Madelyn Brown! Madelyn has been accepted to the University of Georgia’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences doctoral program in the Department of History. Madelyn was awarded full funding in the form of a Teaching Assistantship, with the University committed to renewing this award for a maximum of six years in the doctoral program. Recipients are selected through a competitive process, and assistantships are awarded only to the most qualified individuals.

Madelyn is a scholar of Indigenous History. In EWU’s McNair program, she worked on her 2019 summer research project with Lecturer SimHayKin S.
