Raúl Segura at CWU!

Congratulations to Raul Segura, a distinguished EWU McNair Scholar and winner of the 2025 Student Leader of the Year Award, on his acceptance into multiple graduate programs! After a competitive application process that resulted in offers from prestigious institutions like the University of Minnesota, Howard University, and the University of Oregon, Raul has chosen to attend Central Washington University’s Ed.S. program, where he will begin his studies in Fall 2025.

As an aspiring school psychologist, Raul’s research focuses on teacher self-perception in multicultural student-teacher relationships, evaluating biases and efforts to engage with students’ cultures. This research explores how a disconnect between a teacher’s background and a student’s diverse identity can affect the student-teacher relationship and academic progress. The goal is to provide insight into the experiences of secondary teachers in Eastern Washington and present data on the effectiveness of current inclusion policies and training.

Raul’s passion for giving back to his community is evident in his commitment to creating a culturally safe and equitable classroom environment. A first-generation college student from Pasco, WA he aims to use his abilities as a bilingual professional to serve the large Spanish-speaking community in his hometown. He has found the McNair program to be instrumental in helping him realize his dream of pursuing a graduate degree and making a difference. Great job Raul!
