According to the Center for First Generation Student Success, not only do 1 in 3 undergraduate students identify as first-generation, but in the coming years, the pipeline of first-time undergraduates will be heavily weighted with first-gen students.

Dr. Tierny Bates (Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at University of South Carolina Upstate) and Dr. Joshua Fredenburg (International Speaker and Founder of the First Generation Student Career Conference) will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the specific career and leadership skills that need to be considered with first generation students and strategic ways that they can effectively integrate career education into their leadership development and/or extracurricular programs for first-gen students

Student Learning Outcomes:

• Participants will learn about the S.H.A.P.E. concept and discover a set of questions that will not only enable them to increase their self-awareness, but will help them gain clarity about how they can maximize their collegiate experience and use it as a launching pad for career success in college and beyond.
• Participants will discover the power of creating a positive vision (clear and concise picture of your future) for success in college and beyond and will learn how to use their collegiate experience to make this vision of success in college and beyond a reality.
• Participants will not only develop a deeper understanding of the importance of being actively involved within their campus community, but they will be provided with specific insight on how they can use their campus involvement as a way to attain college and career success.

Faculty/Staff Learning Outcomes:

• Participants will learn about the top career and leadership competencies for first-generation students noted in various NACE (National Association of College and Employers) journal articles and studies.
• Participants will learn how to integrate career education into leadership development and extracurricular programs for first generation students.
• Participants will learn how to meet the career and leadership development needs of first-generation students through innovative and impactful career and leadership development programs.
• Participants will increase their teaching and leadership capacity at serving diverse groups of students within their campus community.
• Participants will not only learn how implement more inclusive practices within the classroom, but they will attain strategic ways to create a campus of belonging for all students within the campus community.
