We are thrilled to congratulate Paola Campos on her acceptance into the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU)—an exciting milestone in her inspiring academic and professional journey.
Paola is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, with ambitious goals of earning her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Over the past three years, she has gained hands-on experience working as a Physical Therapy aide in various clinics around Spokane. During this time, Paola has shown her dedication to patient care, forming meaningful connections with patients, learning from experienced Physical Therapists, and finding fulfillment in witnessing patients’ progress and recoveries.
A career in Physical Therapy has always been Paola’s dream. Her passion was further solidified through her participation in Toucan Abroad—a program that allowed her to shadow Physical Therapists internationally and see firsthand the many ways this field opens doors to helping people.
Beyond her clinical experience, Paola has made significant contributions to research as a McNair scholar at Eastern Washington University. Under the mentorship of Dr. Fahed Mehyar, her 2024 research project, titled “Strategies Used by Physical Therapists to Improve Physical Therapy Sessions for Patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP): A Physical Therapists Perspective,” explored how outpatient physical therapists enhance care for patients facing language barriers. The study, presented at the McNair Summer Research Symposium, identified that while translators are the most frequently used resource, therapists also simplify sessions and exercises when translators aren’t available. Paola’s work highlights the importance of culturally and linguistically appropriate healthcare and paves the way for future improvements in patient-therapist communication for those with LEP.
Paola’s acceptance into PNWU’s highly respected DPT program is a testament to her hard work, compassion, and vision. We are certain she will continue to excel, inspire, and make a meaningful impact in the world of Physical Therapy. Paola mentions, “growing up in a rural and underserved community, I look forward to being able to learn and better serve these communities.”
Congratulations, Paola! We are proud to celebrate your achievements and look forward to seeing all you accomplish as you take this next step in your journey!
