We are proud to announce that Jasmine Joy Paloma, a McNair scholar, has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Boeing Employees Credit Union (BECU) Foundation Scholarship. The BECU Foundation’s mission is to foster educational opportunities by providing scholarships that reflect the credit union’s core value of “people helping people.” Through its ongoing support, the foundation honors students who demonstrate leadership, academic excellence, and a commitment to community service.
Jasmine is a first-generation college student at Eastern Washington University (EWU), where she is pursuing a major in social work and minors in psychology, sociology, and anthropology. Set to graduate in spring 2026, Jasmine has consistently earned a place on the dean’s list and has been an active leader on campus. She served as president of the Asian Student Association Club from 2022 to 2025, also playing a key role in establishing the club.
Her research interests include the history of food, social justice, historical oppression, and the experiences of diverse groups. Jasmine’s current research project, under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Scully and Dr. Pui-Yan Lam, focuses on community-based organizations serving immigrants and refugees in Spokane County, titled “Community-based Organizations Serving Immigrant and Refugees.” By conducting interviews with leaders and employees at 20 organizations, Jasmine aimed to identify both the challenges and strengths faced by these non-profits, ultimately offering recommendations to help them better support immigrant and refugee communities.
Jasmine’s achievements and dedication to marginalized populations exemplify the values celebrated by the BECU Foundation. We congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to her continued impact both on campus and in the broader community. Great job, Jasmine!
