On Saturday October 10th, Spokane comes alive for SpoYo, the first annual Spokane Youth Book Festival, a celebration of the importance of books in young people’s lives.
First, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, EWU’s Riverpoint Campus serves as host for a full slate of free events for children and their families, where they can meet renowned authors, ask questions, discover new books and create their own, and much more.
Authors Nick Bruel (Bad Kitty series), Liesl Shurtliff (Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin), Dan Gemeinhart (The Honest Truth), Kris Dinnison (You and Me and Him), Katherine Pryor (Sylvia’s Spinach), Sherri Duskey Rinker (Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site), comic book graphic novelist Kazu Kibuishi (Amulet series), and more will be on hand reading from their work, leading workshops, and spreading a love of books.
These events are free to the public. The Fresh Plate Café will be serving food all day, and families are encouraged to bring food and refreshments of their own.

Then, Saturday evening at 7:00 PM, SpoYo culminates at the Bing Crosby Theater with author S.E. Grove, whose 2014 debut for middle-grade readers, The Glass Sentence, was an Indiebound and New York Times Bestseller. Its sequel, The Golden Specific, was published this summer and continues the 19th century oceanfaring adventures of young protagonists Sophia and Theo. The book was called a “delicious blend of magic, history, and science” by School Library Journal and “brilliant in concept, breathtaking in scale and stellar in its worldbuilding” by Kirkus Reviews.
The author will read from her work and talk about her inspiration for the books, as well as take questions from the audience. Books will be available from Auntie’s Bookstore.
This event is free to all youth and students with current ID. $5 suggested donation for adults.
