One of the biggest events at this year’s festival will be An Evening with Roxane Gay. Roxane Gay is an author and cultural critic whose writing is unmatched and widely revered. Her work garners international acclaim for its reflective, no-holds-barred exploration of feminism and social criticism. Gay recently became the first black woman to ever write for Marvel Comics when she wrote a series in the Black Panther universe called World of Wakanda. Roxane’s newest work, How to Be Heard, is set to release in 2019.

The Smith-Barbieri Progressive Fund is a 501(c)3 charitable foundation that believes in the Inland Northwest’s quality of life and its great future potential. The fund focuses primarily on eradicating poverty, expanding affordable housing, and other quality of life issues in the Inland Northwest. The fund is founded and managed by Don Barbieri and his domestic partner Sharon Smith and together they have a combined 65 years of philanthropic efforts dedicated to the Greater Spokane area. Smith and Barbieri personally donate to the Foundation themselves to fund certain projects and cover all overhead costs. They employ no foundation staff, draw no salaries or fees, accept no expense reimbursements, and receive no personal benefit from the Foundation.
The fund supports several community efforts such as Spokane Homeless Supplies; a community-led effort that aims towards not just donating essential life goods to the homeless, but also finding housing to eradicate the homelessness crisis all together. The Smith Barbieri fund is also partnering with “Friends of The Black Lens Spokane (News From a Different Perspective)”; a non profit organization built on memberships to improve the wellbeing of the African American Community. Smith-Barbieri also aids the “Immigration Justice Partnership”; a partnership between multiple non-profit organizations and churches that work to provide legal expense funding for Spokane immigrant families who are threatened with incarceration and possible deportation. The English department degrees provide EWU students with strong writing skills and a background in critical analysis, the structure of language, and literary history. The EWU English Department offers students 5 different bachelor degrees, 4 minors, and 3 graduate degrees. The English department prides itself on offering small classes where students are free to ask questions and develop strong intellectual ties with professors and other students.

The Friends of the Library is a community-based, nonprofit volunteer group of Spokane citizens working towards inspiring passionate lifelong learners to invest in their community libraries. The Community Building Foundation empowers local organizations to help our community experience justice, vibrancy, and sustainability. They give grants to non-profits in the Spokane River watershed with creative solutions for a more vibrant, just, and sustainable city. Their mission is to host, inspire, and catalyze social change in the Spokane region.

Eastern Washington University Office of Diversity and Inclusion is a program that promotes an inclusive and welcoming community that works to fully embrace diverse individuals, thoughts, and ideas. Members of the program strive to “become a microcosm of society reflecting diversity within the student, faculty, and staff populations”.
Eastern Washington University Multicultural Center is known on campus as a “home away from home” for students of color and marginalized communities. The department offers a space where students and faculty can come and engage in critical conversation, study, conduct meetings, and host social events.
Eastern Washington University Women’s and Gender Studies is a department that “generates opportunities for interdisciplinary feminist analysis and knowledge creation while fostering leadership in intersectional activism”. Their core values of equity, inclusivity, and justice are found intertwined in all teachings.
Eastern Washington University Pride Center is a student funded unit that works to be a welcoming space for members who identify as LGBTQ+. The Pride Center supports, empowers, and advocates on behalf of students, connects EWU community members to on-campus and local resources, creates and facilitates inspiring programs and events, and delivers educational trainings and workshops.

Since 1903 YWCA Spokane has been supporting women and children impacted by domestic violence, homelessness, and unemployment. YWCA Spokane does so by providing to the 3 main areas of need identified in the community: Domestic violence survivor services, Economic advancement, and Children’s services.
