The hilltops of Nelson, BC boast of the outdoors and art: the cascading greenery of the Selkirk range, the jewel-toned glimmer of Kootenay Lake, a colorful and laid-back atmosphere folded into its several nooks, and perhaps its greatest treasure, its writers. Get Lit! is excited to welcome a group of talented women writers hailing from Nelson, BC for a reading on Saturday April 27th. The name of the event comes from their own annual festival, Elephant Mountain Literary Festival, which runs from July 11th-14th, 2019.

Say hello to this year’s writers:

Leesa Dean is a graduate of the University of Guelph’s Creative Writing MFA program and an instructor at Selkirk College in the Kootenay region of British Columbia. Her first book, Waiting for the Cyclone, was a finalist for the 2017 Trillium and ReLit Awards. She is currently working on a novel in verse called Manuelzinho, based on the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop, as well as a collection of short stories about Kootenay disaster moms.

JG (Judy) Toews lives in Nelson, Canada, the mountain town that inspires the setting for her Stella Mosconi mysteries. First in the series, Give Out Creek (Mosaic Press, 2018) was shortlisted for the 2016 Arthur Ellis Award for Best Unpublished Crime Novel.

Jane Byers’ 2nd poetry collection, Acquired Community (Caitlin Press-Dagger Editions, 2016) is a 2017 Golden Crown Literary Society Award Winner for Poetry and on All Lit Up’s Top Ten Social Justice publications. Jane has had poems and essays published in various literary journals in Canada, the U.S. and England, including Best Canadian Poetry 2014. She is the 2017-18 Writer-In-Residence for the Archives of Lesbian Oral Testimony at Simon Fraser University. She lives with her wife and two children in Nelson, BC.

Anne DeGrace is the author of four novels published by McArthur & Company: Treading Water, Wind Tails, Sounding Line, and Flying with Amelia. She is now with Cormorant Press, which released Flying with Amelia in paperback in 2014. f Anne’s storytelling, Toronto Globe and Mail reviewer Candace Fertile wrote: “Being moved by a book is one of the great joys of my life, and Anne DeGrace never fails to deliver emotionally rich and aesthetically enticing fiction.” Anne writes in a hilltop studio near Nelson, BC, with views of mountain, lake, and the occasional elk.
