Admissions is currently implementing Hobson’s Apply Yourself, a new online application, as a first step in the larger Constituent Relations Management implementation. As part of this implementation, we are making significant changes to the application process to make it easier for students and applicants to use, to enhance communication with students and prospects, and to improve the overall admissions process.
The Financial Aid Office provided a number of outreach sessions, including on campus information sessions for prospective transfer students and the Academic Support Center, Cheney H.S. Financial Aid Night, the National College Fair, the Eagle Preview, and Running Start students.
Records and Registration has launched the undergraduate online graduation application in EagleNET. This allows undergraduate students to apply and pay online for their graduation.
Student Life
EWU has selected Perkins+Will as the successful architect for the Pence Union Building (PUB) Renovation Predesign. Perkins+Will is recognized among the country’s top architectural firms and holds significant experience in designing student unions, most recently for the University of Washington’s Husky Union Building (HUB). The PUB project is in its preliminary phase, with various design workshops for students and key stakeholders scheduled throughout the spring. The student vote on a fee to support the project is planned for the first week of May, with an update to the Board of Trustees slated for the May 15 meeting.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) received full re-accreditation by the International Association of Counseling Services’ Board last month (October 2013). Currently, CAPS’ client list reflects a growth of approximately 10% (totaling 265 clients) over the previous year, with a wait list of 27 students. Consistent with our usual practice, we are hiring some additional part-time counselors to ensure these students are served and to eliminate the wait list.
Intramural Sports has experienced its largest fall quarter participation in the last 10 years, with a 20% increase in student involvement over Fall 2012. In addition, EWU has been selected to host the West Coast NIRSA Basketball Championship in February 2014.
In October, EPIC Adventures Hosted another successful EWU Rail Jam, hosting 78 snowboarders/skiers and more than 450 spectators at the largest college event of its kind in the country.
EWU Club Golfer Jake Erickson qualified for and competed in the National Club Championship in mid-November in Myrtle Beach, SC, skillfully representing EWU among the top 220 club golfers in the country.
Under the leadership of new director Tricia Hughes, Health, Wellness and Prevention Services (HWPS) has convened a Campus/Community Stakeholder Group. Among the first topics this team will consider are sexual violence and alcohol education/awareness programs for college students, including the current national “best practice” models, with a plan to develop and adopt a new approach beginning Fall 2014. Ultimately, our goal is to promote students’ overall health/wellness and reduce the number and severity of incidents related to high-risk drinking behaviors.
Student Activities, Involvement, and Leadership (SAIL) is launching a new leadership training program for EWU student leaders. Phired Up Productions, an internationally-recognized leader in the field of leadership, communication, and networking education, will facilitate a certification program for students on January 12, 2014.
ASEWU is developing a student survey to assess EWU Library usage/demand, with a goal to advise institutional leadership regarding extending library hours. The survey is expected to launch in early December 2013, with results tabulated by January 2014.
In November, the Pride Center sponsored its annual “Gender Awareness Week” marked by a series of provocative international and domestic films, and subsequent facilitated discussions, related to issues of gender and identity.
Career Services
We continue to grow our internship opportunities and student participation. This year 18 students applied for the Legislative Internship—the largest group ever. We usually have several students selected for this prestigious placement. A busy fall included special coordinated visits from industry leaders in accounting and high tech, numerous workshops and employer outreach activities, and co-sponsoring with Academic Affairs Portal to Your Future Grad School and Majors Fair.
Veterans Resource Center
EWU provided priority registration for student veterans per State House Bill 1109. Over 400 student veterans took advantage of this benefit within the first day of priority registration. The University received and distributed $878,950 in tuition and fees from GI Educational benefits in support of student veterans at EWU for Fall Quarter 2013. This is an increase of $105,000 from Fall 2012.
Housing and Residential Life
This Fall EWU finished something BIG, 354 students moved into the brand new state of the art residential facility, snyamncut Hall. Amenities within snyamncut include a great room with a gas fireplace, full kitchens on every floor, a covered front porch, study areas with natural lighting, game rooms, and wireless access throughout. Moonlight Breakfast is on the horizon! (Sunday December 8 from 8-10pm in the PUB MPR). This event is our way to give students an opportunity to relax before finals, and receive encouragement from University community members. Usually, we serve 700 students a great late night meal of pancakes and sausage.
