Fire season is here, and with it comes a reminder Fire season is here, and with it comes a reminder that taking care of yourself and others includes being prepared for the unexpected.

Whether you’re dealing with smoke, changing travel plans, concerns about loved ones, or simply feeling overwhelmed by what you’re seeing in our region, know that you don’t have to navigate it alone. The Dean of Students Office, Student Accommodations and Support Services, and Counseling and Wellness are here to help connect you with resources and support where we can! The EWU community is a strong one and our goal is always to show up how we can when you need it.

A few reminders:
🔥 Stay informed through trusted local alerts. I, personally, like the Watch Duty App and monitor it regularly! Also, make sure you have signed up for Eagle Alerts and the Eagle Safe App.
💧 Keep water on hand and limit outdoor activity when air quality is poor.
📱 Have a plan for communication and emergency contacts.
❤️ Check in on friends, classmates, family members, and yourself.

Eags take care of Eags. If fire season impacts you or your ability to be successful at EWU, reach out and know we’re here to support you.

While I was celebrating graduates crossing the stage at Reese Court, our Eagle Pride Center (@ewupridecenter) team and EWU community were celebrating at Spokane Pride (@spokanepride). Shout out to Al and Naite for sending me a few photos filled with the joy!

One of my favorite moments this weekend was seeing students proudly wear their lavender stoles and Pride flair as they crossed the stage. Different celebrations, same message: live fully, love boldly, and be unapologetically yourself 🦅♥️!

To our LGBTQ+ Eags and allies, thank you for helping create a community where people are seen, valued, and know they belong.

@ewuswoop - you are one magical bird being here, there and everywhere! Thanks for bringing the EWU love, hype, spirit to so many spaces!

♥️🦅🎓 LET ’EM KNOW, EAGS. 🎓🦅♥️

What an incredible three days.

Six commencement ceremonies. Countless award celebrations. Endless moments of pride, laughter, tears, hugs, high-fives, and joy.

To every graduate who crossed that stage: let ’em know who you are. Let ‘em know what you’ve overcome. Let ’em know what it means to be an Eagle.

This week reminded us that a degree is so much more than a piece of paper. It represents resilience, growth, community, and the courage to keep going when things got hard.

A special thank you to our faculty and staff who pour their hearts into creating meaningful experiences for students every single day. Special shout out to all staff and faculty who showed up and showed out to make all the ceremonies happen with pizzazz. Thank you to our Board of Trustees for celebrating alongside us, and congratulations to Dr. Carmen Nezat (@cstemewu) on her well-deserved recognition. Your impact on students is extraordinary.

Thank you to honorary doctorate recipient Jess Walter @jesswalterbooks for reminding us that graduation isn’t the end of learning—it’s an invitation to remain curious, keep asking questions, and invest in a lifetime of growth.

Shout out to Ginelle, Kelsey (@ewualumni) President McMahan (@ewupresmcmahan), and my MVP, Chandalin, for bringing the energy, enthusiasm, and behind-the-scenes magic that helped make this weekend so special.

To our @ewu_rotc Fighting Eagles ROTC graduates thank you for your service, leadership, and commitment as you accepted your commissions and prepared for the next chapter.

And to the many student leaders from the programs I have had the privilege to teach and support, watching you walk across that stage was one of the greatest honors of my career.

The last few days have been nothing short of epic.

To the Class of 2026: wherever life takes you next, know that your EWU family will forever be cheering you on. #Eagle4Life

Now go make your mark.

We’ll be here letting everyone know how proud we are of you. 🦅♥️🦅♥️

As our seniors walked back through the pillars at the 10th Anniversary Senior Send-Off, I couldn’t help but think about what this song reminds us: no matter where life takes our graduates next, they will always have a home at EWU. ❤️🦅❤️🦅

Hoonah (EWU’s biggest four-legged fan 🐾) and I loved joining students, faculty, staff, alumni, families, and community members to cheer on the Class of 2026 as they took one more walk through this beloved tradition.

To our graduates: chase big dreams, climb every mountain, and make your mark on the world. Remember we’ll always be cheering for you, and we hope you’ll come back and see us often.

Next stop: graduation! 🎓

I believe some of the most meaningful student expe I believe some of the most meaningful student experiences can happen outside the classroom, and Student Affairs professionals get the privilege of helping create those moments. Whether it’s club sports, intramurals, outdoor adventures, fitness programs, or simply finding a community of people, recreation helps students build confidence, develop leadership skills, support their wellbeing, and discover a sense of belonging at EWU. The next Director of Campus Recreation won’t just oversee programs and facilities, they’ll help shape the student experience for thousands of Eagles. If you know someone who is passionate about Student Affairs, student development, wellbeing, community, and leadership, we’d love your help getting this opportunity in front of them.

EWU friends — if the skies start throwing lightning, thunder, hail, sideways rain, and main character energy…please make good choices 😂

A few storm survival life skills:
⚡️ If you can hear thunder, head inside
🔋Keep your phone, computer, and backup battery packs charged
📲Have the EagleSafe App downloaded on your phone and make sure you are signed up for EWU Alerts through @ewupolicedepartment https://inside.ewu.edu/police/ewu-alerts/
🚗 Don’t drive through flooded roads
🌳 Avoid trees, metal poles, and “this should be fine” decisions
🐶 Bring pets inside too (Hoonah approves this message)
🛋️ Cozy indoor plans > becoming a weather story on TikTok

College is about learning…including how not to get taken out by a surprise hailstorm.

Take care of yourselves, grab some snacks, have a flashlight handy if power goes out, check in on your friends, and remember: Eagles look out for Eagles!

PUP-date from the Dean of Students crew 🐾 Miss PUP-date from the Dean of Students crew 🐾

Miss Hoonah has officially completed her training and has gone through an extensive process with amazing support from campus leadership (@drj_students1st) to be approved to spend time on campus loving on students, faculty, staff, and visitors ❤️🦅❤️🦅!

While she won’t be around every day, you’ll definitely start seeing her more regularly around EWU. And yes… you are absolutely welcome to say hello because her training is literally centered around loving humans and making people smile.

Meanwhile… Togiak the Terror is now 15 weeks old and currently focused on mastering important life skills like blowing bubbles in his water dish and causing absolute chaos in the cutest way possible. 😂 It’s going to be a WILD training ride with this one, but we’re hopeful he’ll eventually join his big sister on campus too.

Big dog life at EWU continues.

🐾🦅❤️🦅🐾

P.S. -you can invite Hoonah to your club meetings or events and if we can make it, we will! Just reach out!
