Compose your own scale or melody
- Surf the internet for a list of numbers (you could start with our link to Related Sites).
- Look for numbers of interest.
- Copy and paste the numbers into the Import Algorithm accessed from the Compose button at
- Think about the effects the numbers may have when scaled via modulo or division.
- Try a few settings for scaling the numbers into pitches and durations
- Write down the settings you like and share the results with the class
Notes:
- Students should consider the scaling operations carefully in relation to the numbers they have found. For example, 40 Fibonacci numbers with the division operation in a range of 0-88 sound quite repetitive and dull.
- The teacher can demonstrate this assignment. Access interesting sites from the “learn more” link in “Import Algorithm” http://musicalgorithms.ewu.edu/algorithms/import.html. Click on “learn more” under 1 Algorithm in red. A pop-up window will display several links.
