Ryan Finner, McNair Scholar attends the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) 33rd Annual McNair & Undergraduate Research National Conference!

Ryan Finner, a dedicated McNair Scholar, attended the 33rd Annual McNair & Undergraduate Research National Conference at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) from September 17-20th, 2025. At this prestigious national gathering, Ryan also delivered a poster presentation titled “Academic Navigation: The Lived Experiences of Bilingual and Multilingual College Students.” Under the guidance of Dr. Julia Smith, Ryan’s research explores the unique academic and social journeys of students who bring diverse language backgrounds to U.S. public universities. His study delves into the experiences of bilingual, multilingual, and non-native English-speaking students as they navigate academic coursework, social spaces, and institutional challenges. Drawing on theories from linguistic and cultural anthropology as well as sociology, Ryan’s qualitative research centers student voices through semi-structured interviews and textual analysis.

Abstract for Ryan’s research, “Academic Navigation: The Lived Experiences of Bilingual and Multilingual College Students”: Navigating college is challenging for many students, especially those with diverse language acquisition experiences. This research examines how bilingual, multilingual, and non-native English speaker college students navigate academic courses, social spaces and institutional barriers in U.S. public universities. Drawing from linguistic and cultural anthropology and sociology, it explores the interplay between language, identity, and academic success. Using qualitative methods primarily semi-structured interviews and textual analysis, this study aims to center student voices to propose more inclusive policies and strategies for students, faculty and administrators. The research asks: (1) How do linguistically diverse college students navigate academic environments? (2) What successes and challenges do students encounter? (3) What strategies are used to overcome or highlight the experiences of these students?

A first-generation college student, Ryan Finner will graduate in Spring 2026 with a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies, concentrating in Sociocultural Anthropology and minoring in Africana Studies.
