Eastern Washington University is proud to celebrate Jasmine Joy Paloma, who has been accepted into the Master of Social Welfare (MSW) program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). This acceptance is a remarkable achievement and a testament to her dedication and passion for social justice.
Jasmine is a first-generation college student at EWU majoring in social work with minors in psychology, sociology, and anthropology, set to graduate in Spring 2026. Since her first year, she has consistently earned a place on the Dean’s List. She also served as president of the Asian Student Association Club from 2022 to 2025.
In the summer of 2025, Jasmine conducted faculty-mentored research under Dr. Jason Scully and Dr. Pui-Yan Lam. Her project, titled: Community-Based Organizations Serving Immigrants and Refugees, examined the barriers and facilitators faced by approximately 20 nonprofits across Spokane County through semi-structured interviews with organizational leaders and employees. The research aimed to offer insights on how these organizations can more effectively support immigrant and refugee communities in the region.
Jasmine’s academic interests include the history of food, social justice, historical oppression, and the experiences of diverse communities. She plans to earn a PhD and use it to better serve marginalized communities. Her acceptance to UCLA’s MSW program is a well-deserved recognition of the scholar and advocate she has already become. Congratulations, Jasmine!
