My Favorite Mistake

Student Contributor: H. Rayburn
My Favorite Mistakes help encourage the mindset that it is more than okay to make mistakes. This tool, best used in community circle, will help students see that we grow and learn from our mistakes.

In community circle each week, ask students a mistake they may have made this week and how they can learn from it. Keep in mind that anyone always has the right to pass, but I highly suggest that the teacher never passes and shares first to set the tone. Be sure to highlight a positive tone and conversation around the idea of making mistakes.
It was a bit of a struggle the first time this was done in my classroom, but after doing it a few times it started to catch on. As a teacher, be sure to really listen to what students have to say. They may share something that you can help support them through.

This tool fits into the supportive phase. Using this prompt puts a positive, supportive tone around making mistakes. It also opens up an opportunity for you, the teacher, to find ways to better support your students through their mistakes and struggles.
This is a student centered influence. This prompts students to acknowledge and take accountability for their mistakes. It has students reflect on how they have grown and what they have learned from these mistakes.
