Acknowledgements are a supportive phase tool that allows students to recognize other students that use Life Skills. Through peers recognizing the good things other peers are doing, a sense of community is established and strengthened.
This tool is just your ordinary game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, but instead of playing simply for pleasure, it is a tool kids use in the classroom to resolve minor conflicts. It is a simple, easy, and quick way for students to resolves issues on their own, allowing for more student independence.
Target talk is encouraging students to behave by acknowledging the pro-social skills they use. This is helpful because it makes students aware of when they are using these skills and encourages them to continue to use them.
The Dice Decision Making tool gives students an opportunity to make decisions in a short amount of time. It eliminates the conflict of group decision making if an answer or idea is unable to be agreed upon.
The positive affirmations grouping tool is a tool to help disengage negative behaviors and thought patterns once the students have begun learning. We all know people and children who get overwhelmed easily and don’t know what to do but shut down, this is what that tool is for.
Fidgets and stress balls are tools that help children be able to move or do something without being distracting. They aren’t a big object that will take up space. These items may even help children learn better.
As a teacher, we are role models inside and outside the classroom. By modeling positivity, students will feel more motivated and have a more enjoyable experience during school.
An energizer can be used to get the students active and reengaged. A good time to use this is after they have been sitting through for a while. This is to help the students not check out during the day.
Placing different colored dot stickers on blank notecards can be used as a grouping strategy. The students each receive one notecard with a specific colored dot and they must find their peer(s) with the same colored dot on their notecard. When students form groups, it prevents students from being left out and all students end up with a partner or in groups easily.
Using fruit groups is a great way to pair (no pun intended) students into partners or small groups.
