After morning procedures, the teacher will conduct a daily “Morning Movement”, where students will follow along with a youtube dance video such as the Just Dance video game. This allows for students to have an opportunity to be active in the morning, helping them get ready for the day.
This tool is helpful as it gives students some responsibility plus the teacher is able to know where everyone is with a simple look at the door.
To help divide the students into groups of 4 or 5 in a more culturally responsive and inclusive way, have students select a color-coded stick at random. Then randomly draw a colored block or paper to let students know where their group will be working.
Giving students the time to have meaningful discussions with sentence frames will teach them how to share their opinions with others. The sentence frames will help guide the conversation when there is a difference in opinions,
Teachers write their students notes of encouragement throughout the year. This serves to encourage students and reinforce positive behavior.
With this tool it’s something that you would be using at the start of the year. Taking time through out the first week to get to know your students and getting your students to get used to talking and sharing their ideas with each other. Getting them used to how it is you are hoping to be running a discussion based classroom. This will be helpful on trying to get the students to be used to sharing their ideas and listening to those ideas from all of their classmates.
A fun and efficient way of gathering your class’ attention without yelling. Using specific phrases that require a call back from students that signal it is time to focus on the teacher.
Each day, there is a different student of the day. The student of the day is the person the teacher will go to for errands, or any type of special tasks. This prevents any types of disagreements about who is going to do that specific task.
This tool is helpful because it is a way to start your mornings off on a good note as well as to check in on your student’s mental mindset as they are beginning their school day. It is also a helpful way to get to know your students and their interests.
Having jobs in your classroom help builds a sense of community and responsibility within your classroom. The jobs help students feel included throughout the day and feel needed.
