The first annual Spokane Youth Book Festival is pleased to be featuring New York Times bestselling author Sherri Duskey Rinker for two sessions during our full slate of free activities for children and families, Saturday October 10 at Eastern Washington University’s Spokane Campus.
Sherri’s 2011 debut, Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site, was inspired by her own nightly efforts to get her young sons to sleep. The New York Times called Goodnight…‘s marriage of truck book and bedtime story a “why hasn’t anybody thought of that before” premise, and children have fallen in love with the nightly rituals of their favorite construction equipment. Her 2013 follow-up, Steam Train, Dream Train, brings a bedtime story from the railways, as one-by-one each unique railcar links up with the dream train in preparation for sleep.
Sherri’s first session during SpoYo goes from 10:30-11:00, when she will lead a storytime (recommended for ages 3-6). She’ll talk about how she became an author then do a reading with a little help from the audience! In this short, lively presentation, she’ll engage her young listeners and offer a chance to ask questions.
Sherri says, “I really enjoy this age group, their unpredictable questions and comments and our occasional need to work out our wiggles!“
Later, from 12:3
0-1:00, Sherri will lead the energetic presentation “The Magic of Books” (recommended ages 5-9). This session features lots of opportunity for interaction and for exploring how an idea becomes a book. Most importantly, children will learn about the magic power of books, how important reading is, and how life-changing books are. Sherri aim to leave kids feeling energized and excited about reading!
