“Show me a person who hasn´t known any sorrow and I’ll show you a superficial,” says Blanche DuBois in Tennessee Williams’ play, A Streetcar Named Desire. The characters in A Streetcar Named Desire have known sorrow, as well as superficiality, pleasure, pain, and love with all its complications. The play depicts faded Southern belle Blanche DuBois’ attempt at grappling with her past, starting anew, and her struggle to maintain her sanity as she visits her sister, Stella, and her sister’s husband, Stanley, at their seedy apartment in New Orleans. Several of our Get Lit! staff members went to see the play at the Spokane Civic Theatre on Thursday, November 3, along with the unofficial MFA program mascot, Phillip. The play was a bit stressful for Phillip due to the loud noises (as well as several cat sounds that were very upsetting) but the humans in attendance had a wonderful time. The play’s small cast was incredible to watch—the actors gave amazing performances and had great chemistry on stage, not to mention the masterful set and stage effects. I went out for a drink afterwards and was talking about it with some friends, one of whom said, “that’s how you know a play was good, it leaves you thinking and talking about it long after it’s over.” Get out and see A Streetcar Named Desire at the Spokane Civic Theatre before it’s too late! The play runs until November 13. For tickets and more information, visit their website here.
