SciENcv & ORCID (NIH/NSF Biosketch & Current/Pending Support)

Federal agencies are standardizing disclosure and documentation requirements using SciENcv and ORCID to strengthen research security and streamline proposal preparation. This page provides EWU investigators with the essential requirements, compliance deadlines, and instructions needed to prepare NIH and NSF‑compliant Biographical Sketches and Current & Pending (Other) Support, along with guidance for other agencies adopting the Common Forms.

Who Must Comply

NIH

All Senior/Key Personnel and any other individuals required by the Funding Opportunity Announcement must use SciENcv to generate and personally certify:

  • Biographical Sketch (Common Form)
  • NIH Biographical Sketch Supplement
  • Current & Pending (Other) Support (Common Form)
NIH requires the use of SciENcv for all applications, JIT, RPPR, and Prior Approval submissions with due dates on or after January 25, 2026, with a leniency period through May 2026.
In addition, NIH requires all senior/key personnel to have an ORCID iD linked to their eRA Commons profile.

NSF

All Senior/Key Personnel must use SciENcv to prepare Biosketches and Current & Pending (Other) Support for proposals submitted or due on or after May 20, 2024.
NSF also requires use of ORCID as the persistent digital identifier for senior/key personnel.

USDA (NIFA)

USDA participates in the federal Common Forms initiative, and SciENcv is accepted for Biosketch and Current & Pending Support requirements. FOAs specify the exact requirements.

DOE

DOE has formally adopted the federal Common Forms for Biosketch and Current & Pending Support for financial assistance awards. FOAs govern implementation dates.

DoD and NASA

These agencies are implementing Common Forms under NSPM‑33, but timelines vary by component. Always follow the specific FOA.

PROCESS OVERVIEW

1. Create or Update Your ORCID ID

  • Register at ORCID.org
  • Populate employment, education, funding, and works
  • Required for both NIH and NSF submissions

2. Link ORCID to your eRA Commons Account (NIH)

  • Log into eRA Commons —-> Personal Profile —-> “Create or Connect your ORCID ID”

3. Access SciENcv

  • Log into SciENcv using eRA Commons, NSF, ORCID, or other supported credentials
  • Connect ORCID for automatic population of fields

4. Generate Required Documents

NIH

  • Biographical Sketch (Common Form)
  • NIH Biographical Sketch Supplement
  • Current & Pending (Other) Support (Common Form)

Must be certified by the investigator. Delegates may assist but cannot certify.

NSF

  • Biographical Sketch (Common Form)
  • Current & Pending (Other) Support (Common Form)
  • Synergystic Activities (1-page separate PDF)

5. Add Delegates (Optional)

You may authorize administrative staff to help prepare documents, but certification must be done by the individual investigator!

6. Upload Certified PDFs

Attach certified SciENcv PDFs to:

  • eRA Commons (NIH)
  • Research.gov (NSF)
  • Agency-specific portals as required
